Reader’s Question:
Would an auto insurance agency or company have any standard way of determining my auto insurance rates? I got the same vehicle that my friend here in Iowa has with the same insurance company but I got higher rates.

It would be safe to say that an auto insurance agency there in Iowa would be using the same kind of information (using very similar procedures) to determine your risk as a driver, and therefore give the appropriate premiums, just as any insurance company would anywhere else in the country. But how the actual rate itself would come out is affected by many factors, so there isn’t really any 100% guarantee that two people would pay the same rate for the same type of coverage with the same company.
To help you understand better, here is a list of ‘subjective’ factors that would influence your auto insurance rates.
1. The type of vehicle you own, the size, model, year, and name of the manufacturer.
2. A person’s driving history, any bad records or arrests as well as unpaid tickets and anything similar.
3. Age group that a customer falls under. Teenagers and Seniors have the highest auto insurance premiums.
4. The city or place where you live, as well as where you drive your car. This would include demographics and crime-rates. Urban dwellers pay more than rural folks.
5. Eligibility to get discounts, such as good student/ good driver discounts, professional association discounts, senior citizen discounts as well as incentives for taking defensive driving classes as well as for installing extra safety/ security measures on the car.
This is why it is a must to compare offers between many auto insurance providers to see who you can get the lowest rates with.
